Fitness boxing is a great option for older adults to help stay fit and one that you may not have considered!
There is no risk of getting punched because your opponent is a bag or the air. Although there is no proof that it is superior to other types of exercise, boxing offers many benefits for older adults and to me its never boring.
According to a 2015 Harvard Health Letter, published by Harvard Medical School, boxing offers STRENGTH BENEFITS from swinging your arms and shoulders and increasing upper body strength. The wide stance of a boxer helps work, the legs, back and core.
It is a great aerobic exercise, that gets your heart pumping, which helps lower your risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke and diabetes.
Fitness boxing is also a great mood lifter like other forms of aerobic exercise and can increase your endurance.
Boxing can be helpful in improving eye-hand coordination and possibly make you feel more alert and attentive. It can help with coordination and balance in general. It requires you to change your position and posture often, usually in different planes of motion. You are rotating and moving from side to side, rather than front to back.
⚠️A word of caution⚠️
If you suffer from osteoporosis or osteoarthritis hitting the bag is not recommended but shadow boxing offers a great alternative!
